Creates documentation for software products or in support of software product implementations. Develops illustrations and examples (from simple programming techniques through complex business applications). Designs documents and document collections for target audience. Demonstrates domain knowledge of assigned product/market areas. May lead writing project teams.
Writes clear, accurate and concise documentation, following all writing guidelines consistently and effectively. Documentation includes usage, reference, and administration guides, online Help, embedded user assistance, and videos. Writing guidelines include standard rules of grammar, modular writing techniques, content models, style guidelines, and editorial guidelines.
Documents complex technical subjects in ways that are easy to understand. Develops effective illustrations and other visual aids to clarify complex topics.
Organizes topic groups, chapters, and entire documents to maximize usability by target personas. May design collections of deliverables for large or complex products or solutions. A collection of deliverables can include help, getting started information, administrative and deployment information, best practices information, etc.
Possesses expertise in one or more specific fields or technical or business domains.
Works effectively with product development teams (including software developers, marketing strategists, and technical support analysts) or professional services implementation teams (including project managers, solution architects, and technical consultants) to gather needed inputs, communicate status to all stakeholders and manager, and produce deliverables that meet targets for quality and timeliness.
If serving as a project leader, allocates work appropriately to project team, taking into account each team member’s job level, skills, and other assignments, working in conjunction with appropriate managers.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Designs and organizes a collection of documents (help, usage guide, administrator guide, etc.) to support a product or solution.
Develops sophisticated examples.
Leads large and/or complex documentation project teams.
Mentors other staff members in areas of expertise
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent knowledge of technical writing principles, conventions, and document processes
Excellent project management, research, planning, and time management skills; expertise in fields and/or business or technical domains related to assigned projects
Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely and to apply standard rules of grammar
Knowledge of business or industry lexicon appropriate to assignments
Ability to design and organize original documents and document collections
Ability to develop examples of high complexity that demonstrate understanding of software applications and business domains
Sufficient technical knowledge to perform software installs appropriate to assignments.
Ability to use publishing software tools effectively
Ability to work as a team member and team leader; ability to serve as an expert in a field or technical or business domain; ability to train staff in area of expertise
Good organizational and creative problem-solving skills
