    As a Technical Writer at SAS, you will create documentation for deploying, administering, and using software products or in support of complex software product implementations. You will develop illustrations and examples (from simple programming techniques through complex business applications). You will design documents and document collections for target audience. You will demonstrate domain knowledge of assigned product/market areas. You may lead writing project teams.  


    Primary Responsibilities: 


    • Write clear, accurate and concise documentation, following all writing guidelines consistently and effectively. Documentation includes usage, deployment, and administration guides, online Help, embedded user assistance, and videos. Writing guidelines include standard rules of grammar, modular writing techniques, content models, style guidelines, and editorial guidelines.
    • Document complex technical subjects in ways that are easy to understand. Develop effective illustrations and other visual aids to clarify complex topics.
    • Organize topic groups, chapters, and entire documents to maximize usability by target personas. Deliverables can include embedded help, getting started information, administrative and deployment information, best practices information, etc.
    • Demonstrate domain/technical knowledge of assigned products/markets.
    • Work effectively with product development teams (including software developers, marketing strategists, and technical support analysts) or professional services implementation teams (including project managers, solution architects, and technical consultants) to gather needed inputs, communicate status to all stakeholders and manager, and produce deliverables that meet targets for quality and timeliness.
    • When serving as a project leader, allocate work appropriately to project team, considering each team member’s job level, skills, and other assignments, working in conjunction with appropriate managers.
    • Manage projects to meet targets for quality and timeliness.


    Additional Responsibilities: 


    • Design and organize a collection of documents (help, usage guide, administrator guide, etc.) to support a product or solution.
    • Develop sophisticated examples.
    • Lead large and/or complex documentation project teams.
    • Mentor other staff members in areas of expertise.


    Additional Skills and Abilities: 


    • Excellent knowledge of technical writing principles, conventions, and document processes.
    • Excellent project management, research, planning, and time management skills; expertise in fields and/or business or technical domains related to assigned projects.
    • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely and to apply standard rules of grammar.
    • Design and organize original documents and document collections.
    • Develop examples of high complexity that demonstrate understanding of software applications and business domains.
    • Sufficient technical knowledge to perform software installs appropriate to assignments.
    • Utilize publishing software tools effectively.
    • Work as a team member and team leader; ability to serve as an expert in a field or, technical or business domain.
    • Train staff in area of expertise.
