Software Developer - Accessibility (Hybrid or Remote option)

The mission of the SAS accessibility team is to enable people of all abilities, including people with disabilities, to enjoy everything SAS has to offer. One of the ways we fulfill that mission is by creating new technology that enables people with disabilities to access data, data visualization, and analytics using alternative methods. For example, our data visualization technology enables people with total blindness to interactively explore data visualizations and geospatial maps using 3D spatial audio.

What you’ll do

 As a Software Developer on the SAS accessibility team, you will expand the capabilities of our browser-based accessibility technology and help product teams across SAS incorporate accessibility into SAS web applications. Your ultimate goal will be to enable effective and efficient browser-based user experiences for users with disabilities.

You will:

While creating accessible browser-based software, you will

• Work within a transparent cross-functional agile team.
• Write code that is easy to understand, maintain, and extend.
• Ensure quality by creating and maintaining automated tests with extensive code coverage.
• Evolve software architecture to meet changes in product requirements.
• Scope product requirements, estimate effort, and help plan release schedules.
• Stay informed of rapidly changing web technologies and incorporate those technologies into products, as appropriate.
• Collaborate with teammates to continually improve the development process.

While helping product teams across SAS incorporate accessibility into SAS web applications, you will:

• Collaborate with product managers to prioritize accessibility defects and features.
• Collaborate with designers to create experiences that delight SAS users of all abilities.
• Prototype accessibility fixes and design patterns.
• Collaborate with test engineers to include accessibility in automated tests.
• Collaborate with technical writers to share information in the form of product documentation, videos, and/or white papers.
• Train individual contributors within product teams to independently satisfy accessibility requirements.

 What we’re looking for

• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• A strong desire and ability to work effectively within a cross-functional team to meet shared goals.
• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
• 5+ years of experience working on large complex software products as a software developer.
• Excellent working knowledge of modern front-end web technologies including JavaScript.
• A demonstrated ability to design and build software systems that are scalable, extensible and maintainable.

The nice to haves

• Working knowledge of the accessibility features of HTML5, the Accessible Rich Internet Application suite and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
• Working knowledge of accessibility testing tools.
• Experience with Dragon Naturally Speaking and at least one screen reader.

Other knowledge, skills, and abilities

• Experience developing UI components in JavaScript.
• Experience with test automation tools and frameworks.
• Experience with Devops.
