About the job 

The R&D Platform Engineering organization is looking for a stellar Sr. Project Manager to help shape the evolution of Viya 4 architecture by applying best practices in design thinking, technical project management, and change management to enable efficiency, clarity of prioritization of objectives for work products, and transparency of progress towards those objectives. This Project Manager needs to be able to facilitate convergence of functional and technical knowledge across various initiatives simultaneously to keep the architecture team in Platform Engineering R&D organized, prioritizing appropriately, and communicating effectively with technical leaders in various functional areas across SAS. 

 

Our high-visibility R&D operations team works across divisional boundaries within and outside of R&D Platform Engineering, collaborating with leadership in product strategy, lines of business, cloud infrastructure, presales, consulting, and customer success to focus on priorities that we can all tackle as one SAS and efficiently manage them towards success. 

  

As a Sr. Project Manager for the Architecture team, you will:  

  • Manage requests for comments (RFC) and architectural decision records (ADR) discussions and approvals 
  • Systematically organize and track research, development and cross-divisional implementations for a team that sets the architectural direction for SAS offerings in collaboration with the entire R&D organization at SAS 
  • Identify dependencies, potential risks and bottlenecks with collaborating teams as well as proactively work towards mitigating, accepting, or removing them 
  • Help the architecture team manage requests for assistance, ensuring team members can stay focused on the priorities that bring the most value and minimizing distractions   
  • Manage project artifacts, timelines, roadmaps, milestones, and deliverables for cross-divisional efforts spearheaded by the architecture team members and in collaboration with product managers 
  • Facilitate retrospectives to help the team members continuously improve and follow through on identified improvement opportunities 
  • Manage internal requisitions for third party software, consultants, or partners, as needed, to help the architecture team innovate efficiently  
  • Organize and help team prepare for regular status and direction meetings with engineering leaders to communicate about and provide input into architecture team progress, priorities, and strategy  
  • Become a trusted advisor to the architecture team 
  • Approach all tasks with a mindset of craftsmanship and excellence, following R&D processes 

Required qualifications  

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field 
  • A minimum of eight years of experience researching, analyzing and/or reporting information related to a specific area of assignment.
  • A minimum of two years of experience managing projects in software manufacturing with a preference for projects related to Kubernetes, containers, cloud-native applications and providers, or software architecture 
  • A minimum of two years of applied agile or kanban software development methodology 
  • A minimum of two years of experience managing Jira projects 
  • Ability to organize and systematize high levels of ambiguity in order to drive clarity across the organization 
  • A drive for excellence while fostering empathy 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills at all levels of the organization, within and external to R&D, conveying expertise, confidence, and transparency 
  • Ability to facilitate convergence of functional and technical knowledge with a variety of R&D and non-R&D stakeholders across the company 
  • Excellent organizational and conflict resolution skills, attention to detail, a pragmatic approach, relentless improvement mindset, and striving for craftsmanship 

Preferred qualifications  

  • Experience with design thinking approaches to innovation 
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
